Reply with quote | #1 | I have read many many posts here about different upgrades. Since I have completed my GG kit I have found it to sound a little bright on my Klipschorns and I am thinking Film/foil Caps may help the sound to be more to my liking. I have made these same mods on other tube gear I had with pleasing results and was wondering if anyone has a recommendation on this?
If you feel this would be worth while what brand would you suggest?
Thanks

G'day ... Depends how many hours uve got on the clock ... I would hesitate to spend $$$ before you have given it a good 2-300 hrs & everything settles in. Besides, the difference between a good capacitor & an expensive one may not give you the sonic adjustment ur after until your circuitry is on equal terms with all the components ... especially resistors ... and there's a lot more of them in there. Don't know what value coupling caps there are in the GG - I presume thats what ur talking about changing ... haven't seen an original BR circuit, but I imagine there's a couple of electros in the PS .. I've gone back to bypassing all electros with a good film & foil 1uf @400v. Broskie has the cheapest & finest I've seen for the $$.. RTI film & foil Polyprops .. 2 for U$20 I think. That would be my recommendation as the first thing to do. You can google for the rationale for that. Then let it get to know itself for a month or two ..
cheers ... cb |

Yeah ... interesting ... I like the 3 x Tx in PS - bipolar & sep filament ... I'd still bypass main electros with a 250v rifa mkp each - they're cheap & good ... MKP tho ... this is different to having big PP's if they're bypass, as he's done ... and there's a few resistors on the signal board ... I still think they have more influence if any, than the difference between a good output cap and another good qual output/coupling cap ... which are 1uf.... good luck with it .... cb |

A better quality Selector Switch makes a big difference. The Volume Control could also use a better quality type. After break-in, you may want to experiment with the signal capacitors. I used Vcap Oil's with very good sonic results. |

Reply with quote | #7 | Brett, you certainly did a great deal work and a great job in building the GG. What is most interesting is that after all the comparisons with the different caps you went to the trouble for a reality check which very few actually do. You went back to stock except for the coupling caps and found that there was very little difference in sound between stock and mod. When I built my GG over a year ago I did very few mods. I had an Alps black Beauty in the parts been and a few .01uf 400v wondercaps lying around and put the better pot in and bypassed the solens with the wondercaps. I have always bypassed large electrolytics with a small high quality cap. I did not compare the sound with and with out these mods because I felt that they were obvious short comings with the stock kit. I never lost sight that this was just a $500 preamp and did not have expectations of nirvana. What I found that did change the sound was the hook up wire for inputs/outputs. I first wired the inputs/outputs with pure silver and did not like that sound, so I went to kimber cable high purity copper and got a bit of the edge off. I was about to go in and do some work on the PS but after what you wrote I do not think I will gain that much for the effort so thanks for that. I still have the stock selector switch and I keep meaning to order a replacement but never seem to get around to doing that. I do wish for a bit more warmth but do not want to loose the speed and detail. I decided to live with it for now and just listen to the music and not think about the sound. Thanks again for you hard work and thoughtful words. |

Of my GG modding I would rate them in this order, the first two being definatively noticeable, and fall into the category of "you get what you pay for". Those after 1 and 2 are subtle and an opinion at best, but would add those Mods are going through Beast amps into high effciency horns, and in front of that is the Phono Pre with a good MC cart. (and a balanced power supply), so the system is resolving enough to hear minute differences. 1. Attenuator. I've used the kit/stock, Alps Blue Velvet, Bruce's stepped (series), and now a mono ladder type Elma for each channel (which also gives a little balance control too). 2. Output caps. V-caps oils, and I really like Mundorff Gold/Silver/Oil. 3. Clean Power: adding Bruce's balanced power supply can do wonders. In addition I also employ Power Line modules/Filters in place of the stock IEC. This could be a local thing and not repeatable at other locations. I go for power as clean as it can be had. 4. Connectors, Selector and Signal Wire: I plug and unplug a lot so the gold plating wears off quickly on connectors unless I use a higher quality (Kit connectors are fine otherwise). Cardas GRFAs. Elma selector (which matches Bruce's stepped and the Elma Monos) and a shielded twisted pair wire from the RCAs to Selector switch. 5. Passives: resistors, electrolytics and diodes. I use PRP resitors and Mills on the higher wattages. I am convinced the resistors used in the signal path make a difference. Low ESR caps on the power supplies. For Diodes: FREDs. 6. Tubes????? Running them at 12 volts (versus 12.6), it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference, as long as they're a quiet tube. (Would like to try a curcuit with 317/variable Voltage reg to see how it affects the sound). I've tried lots of different tubes and would suggest one spend money on attenuators or caps before trying different tubes. Gold plated sockets to prevent corrosion, high temp o-rings for tube dampers, and DEOXIT Gold on tube pins and Interconnects/RCAs. 7. For scratch-built I can detect no difference between a toroidal and the stock type trannies. The toroidals just look cool. 8. Feedback values. I keep coming back to the stock 100K value. 9. I use a silver coated solid core copper hook up wire with Teflon insulation and a quad eutectic solder, or something with a little silver (and lead) in it, both just a personal preference. 10. Decent (not expensive) interconnects. Something that's shielded. Currently using some Dayton Audio interconnects from Parts Express: not expensive, work just fine and have cut down on the iterference problem I was having.
Did I miss anything?
Modding the GG should yeild more results than modding the upstream or downstream components.
And, as a DIY hobby, this is still cheaper than vintage car restoration..............or a visit to the dentist.......... or lap dances down at the Badda Boom Badda Bing.........

I posted this reply to CHARLIE M's similar question quite some time ago.
IMHO it could provide you with some solutions...

Quote: Charlie M,
Many thanks for your most interesting post; it is the most enjoyable thread I have read on this forum for quite a while...
I too only own one self-assembled GG Pre and have done many of the typical upgrades including Stepped Attenuator, Elna Selector, Better Resistors & Diodes, Better Caps, NOS Tubes [Telefunkens], Finite Elemente Ceraball feet, etc...
But the biggest sonic improvement [by far...] was a result of applying dampening materials [Humble Blue-Tac and heat-proof rubber o-rings] to each and every tube, cap and inner chassis surface the amp has.
Dampening [as we know] simply helps eliminate vibrations which [to my mind] is vital as it appears that each component [passive or otherwise] introduces its own 'frequency'... or at least that's what I believe. [This will bring the Philistines out of the woodwork... ]
To my ears and in my system, the resulting sound is purer and more refined... and more extended in both frequency extremes. In a nutshell: a lot of the 'hash and garbage' that many of us thought was in the music disappears... leaving a very relaxed yet detailed presentation.
This is an easy and cheap upgrade and can quickly and easily be reversed.
I would be interested to read about your findings rom such an upgrade.
In any event, many thanks for posting such an enjoyable thread...
Sincerely
