Greetings one  and all.

I know this topic has been discussed quite a few times, but having read everything I can find on the topic, I'm a little baffled.

I have the Transcendent Phono and GG Pre amp. I want to add a Moving Coil cartridge, so, will need a Step Up Transformer.

I understand Bruce recommends placing the SUT after the Phono output, and before the Pre amp.

My understanding (correct if wrong) is that it's usually placed before the Phono input stage.

This article appears to confirm that explicitly.

I wonder how placing the SUT after the Phono stage affects the components in the SUT. That is, wouldn't impedance, or something, be different depending on whether the SUT goes before the Phono in put, or after the Phono stage out put?

Thanks for any guidance on this confusing matter.

SUT goes between phono cart and preamp input--always.

I suggest this one--great sounding and reasonably priced -

C.B.,

Thanks for this recommendation. Recommendations, actually.

I keep reading positive things about the Lundahls. And also that they are quite helpful to customers, which is good, since I don' t really know what I'm doing.

Regards,

Brenton

If you are in the states contact Kevin at http://www.kandkaudio.com

He was most helpful to me and I found the Lundahls he recommended to me sounded better than Jophn Curl's Vendetta Research step up device I was using

I have the GG and Bruce's Phono

I'd like to suggest the Cinemag CMQEE-3440A.   Purchase directly from Cinemag; http://cinemag.biz/index.html

I believe they were a little over $100.00 for the pair, plus shipping.
They are superb trannys (using Altec 4722s and Dukane 3A25s as comparisons).

However if you're looking for something a little easier to set up, go with Paul's recommendation.  K&K has kits and assembled units.

Great recommendations, fellas.

I  think I better go with a kit, if available.

I think I'm about ready to take the moving coil plunge.

With all the extra gain needed for MC you need to get all your duck in a row and be prepared for chasing hum sources.  If you can hear any hum with your MM cartridge set up, it will be magnitudes greater with a MC set up.

I better check to confirm it, but I think hum is no worse on phono than digital. To hear anything at all, with no music playing, I have to get within a foot or two of my speakers.

While we're on the topic, would you say you're satisfied that a decent MC is a noticeable and satisfying upgrade over a good MM?

A big topic! But I think that if you add up opinions on the topic: If your music is jazz and classical, there is no doubt; MC is the way. If you  listen to rock etc, then it is less clear, and of course a MM is generally a lot less expensive.

If (of course) it is set up properly, a MC will not hum (significantly) played through a TS Phono; I do that very thing, and I can only hear hum if I turn it up extremely loud, with no music playing. It is not an issue.

Good luck!

Update:

Ok, guys, Cartridge installed and aligned with K & K audio SUT.

After breaking a wire in the SUT (inside to the RCA connector), I ran my MC cartridge to my TS Phono + GG Pre amp. With the volume at 3 to 4 oclock, it was more than sufficiently loud.

Was the SUT entirely unnecessary?

Well, I fixed the SUT and have it in line now. Seems the noise level relative to the music is down (was that noise from the amps associated with the high volume level?)

Any way, for what it's worth, it's the Transfiguration Axia with a .38 millivolt output. A little higher I think than the usual MC cartridge.

Thanks again for your help. I'm really happy with the sound!

Cheers,

Brenton.

It all depends on the output voltage of the MC.  some are fairly high (greater than .5mv and some are extremely low.  Mine is a Shelter 501 series ll and it is considered a medium output and I felt I needed the SUT because I lowered the gain of the GG somewhat to accommodate other sources.  I am quite happy with the Lundahls I purchased from K&K Audio.
